Faux Stained Glass Project

With the warmer weather fast approaching, create a faux-stained glass art piece to catch the sun's rays!

Watch the above video or follow the written steps below to create your very own faux stained glass suncatcher!

The supplies needed for this project.

The materials needed for this project include:

  • Acrylic paint

  • School glue

  • Frame with glass (can be found at a thirft or dollar store)

  • Paint brush

  • Tape

  • Squeeze bottle with needle nozzle (can be ordered online or found at most craft stores)

  • Printed design that fits onto the glass

Before starting, measure the size of the glass. You can then resize and print out a design from the Design Library to fit into this space. If your glass is smaller, I recommend using a simple design with fewer lines. My framed glass is a bit larger, so I will be using the Ivy Stained Glass design.

Tracing the design with the fake “lead lines”.

To make tracing easier, tape the design to the back of the glass so it won’t move. Then, create the fake lead lines liquid by mixing black paint with regular school glue in a squeeze bottle.

To create your design on the glass, gently squeeze out thin lines of black glue following the pattern you want to make. Keep in mind that if you press the glue bottle harder, the lines will be thicker, so try to apply gentle pressure. Wait for the lines to dry completely before proceeding.

The design is fully traced with the “lead lines”

The back of the glass painted with the acrylic paint and glue mix.

After the black "lead lines" have dried, it's time to mix your “colored stained glass”. To achieve a more translucent look, you can use clear school glue and a lower paint-to-glue ratio. But if you prefer a more opaque look, then regular glue is the way to go. The more paint the more opaque it will appear.

Before painting, flip the glass over and remove the paper from the back of the glass. Mix the acrylic paint and school glue, then use your paintbrush to paint the back of the glass. Depending on your desired opacity, you may need to paint two coats of the paint/glue mixture. Finally, hold up your design to the light and enjoy the stunning stained glass effect!
